End to bottlenecks in Palmanova

PALMA
THE Palmanova to Paguera dual carriageway will be used by 30'000 vehicles a day, according to Mabel Cabrer, the Balearic minister of public works, housing and transport.

She was speaking at the opening of the nine kilometres of dual carriageway, corresponding to the widening of the existing road and the prolongation of the Ma-1 between Palmanova and Paguera. Cabrer was accompanied by the Mayors of Calvia and Andratx, Carlos Delgado and Jaume Porsell respectively.

Cabrer said that the new road would put an end to the bottlenecks at Palmanova. The project has also made it possible to extend the Calvia promenade from the Cala Figuera junction to Paguera. Two bridges for pedestrians have been built over the Cala Figuera roundabout.

The cost of work was 49.3 million euros.
It included a false tunnel of 195 metres at the Coll de Gorvio, linking two protected areas which had been separated by the former lay-out of the road.

There are four fly-overs on different levels, at Cala Figuera, Santa Ponsa, Costa de la Calma and Peguera-La Romana.
There are also four tunnels to guarantee that no nucleus is isolated.
Cabrer also announced improvements to the bus service, which now has five new vehicles for the lines 102 (Palma-Paguera), 106 (Palma-Magalluf), Calvia-Es Capdella and the Son Bugadelles industrial estate.

Socialist spokesman for Calvia Antoni Manchado complained that he had not been invited to the opening, which, he said was promoted by his party during the last legislature.
