Green card-cheme ready to roll

|

The Balearic government Green Card scheme offering visitors and residents a host of discounts will become fully operational on May 1.

The tourist card, valid for 15 days, will be on sale across the island by then with the year-long resident card due to be brought into service by the start of July.

Each card comes with information printed in six different languages, including English, which provides all the information about what benefits the card entitles holder to and where. There is also a map of whichever Balearic island the card holder is visiting, and instructions of how the card is activated.

The pack also contains a booklet which explains how the card came into being. It tells how the government aims to generate extra funding for the Foundation for the Sustainable Development of the Balearics Islands which was set up last year to protect and manage the region's environment and heritage.

Both the tourist and resident cards will cost ten euros, six of which will go towards the environment and, this year, one will be donated per card to relief projects in tsunami-hit South East Asia.

Balearic Minister for Tourism Joan Flaquer said at yesterday's presentation that the government aims to sell 300'000 Green cards this year and have the cards available on sale at as many outlets as possible, as quickly as possible.

The Foundation has already developed four projects the Green card funds will help develop. These include a solar-powered cruise tour of Palma harbour, a multi-media historical experience at Sant Nicolau Castle in Cuitadella, Minorca and a world of salt works in Ibiza at the new Interpretation centre in the old San Francesc church in Ibiza town and improvements to visitor facilities at the Albufera Natural Park near Alcudia.
