Balearic household complaints

Staff Reporter
HOUSEHOLDERS in the Balearics complain chiefly about the lack of green areas incorporated into urban developments, poor street cleaning and noise pollution.

According to the National Institute of Statistics's 2001 Population and Housing report issued yesterday, 43.06 percent of the total number of homes in the Islands believe that there are just not enough areas of parkland in the housing developments where they live, and 37.7 percent claim that the standard of street cleaning is poor.

Other problems included 33.66 percent complaining about noise pollution; 21.36 percent about crime; 17.78 percent about contamination and unpleasant smells; and 16.49 percent about poor communication networks.

Another angle of the same report shows that 25.48 percent of the 305'477 homes in the Balearics enjoy individually structured central heating in their homes and 1.64 percent share communal central heating.

However, 59.98 percent have no such installation and employ other methods of keeping warm.
The report also highlights the fact that 14 percent of homeowners have a second property; 47.17 percent own a vehicle; and 24.42 percent own two.
The majority of households in the Balearics are made up of two people (77'365), followed by those inhabited by just one person (73'978); by three people (62'093); by four (58'951); and by five (21'338).
