MANACOR
The Catalan word glosat refers to a long song, often composed in an improvised manner and expressed by the glosadors, popular poets of Majorca and Minorca. On Sunday, the Es Canonge cultural association paid an emotional tribute to three master glosadors who are charged with the almost sacred responsibility of ensuring the survival of the glosa. Joan Planissi of Can Picafort, Antoni Socias from Sa Pobla, and Rafel Roig from es Carritxó were garlanded with the Golden Feather award of Canonge and special diplomas commemorating the occasion. A group of young glosadores then proceeded to dedicate a glosa to the three masters.
Crowded streets at fair
INCA
T he streets of Inca were packed yesterday for the first of three fairs which are traditionally held prior to the festival of Dijous Bou, (Good Thursday).
Plenty of people were anxious to make the most of the chance to purchase flowers and plants, Balearic fine food and wine produce, ensaïmadas and to view latest technology.
Plaza Mallorca, the location where Balearic products were on display had a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. It was difficult to find space to walk along calles Major and Comerç and also through the Plaza España where central areas for flower and plant selling had been set up.
Youngsters were quite happy passing the time on bouncy castles and at plaza Quartera where entertainment for children had been organised.
Bumper Harvest
WINE GROWING AREAS
T he grape harvest has come to an end for the original trademark wine producing houses (Bodegas) of Binissalem with a record harvest. The area's original wine trademark secretary, Josep Carretero, said that this year, we have managed to collect 2'280'908 kilos of grapes for the cellars. The growth, he claimed, was due to harvest on extended territories where vines had been newly planted for the Binissalem wine producing market.
It is expected that this year's product is going to be one of high quality. The harvest had begun uncertainly due to bad weather, but then it stabilised meaning that we were able to extend the period of time for collecting the grapes which enabled us to pick them just at the right moment of their ripening.
Seabed clean-up
LLUCMAJOR
Agroup of 22 underwater enthusiasts from the Es Cap Roi Club in Llucmajor, together with three divers and biologists from the regional government Environment ministry gave a clean-up this weekend to the seabed at Caló de Sant Antoni, alongside the Club Nautico at s'Arenal.
Getting rid of accumulated waste material began at 8am on Sunday and finished at midday. Among the flotsam and jetsam trawled from the depths included wheels from lorries, tractors and cars, a water heater, two winches from professional fishing boats, an iron chair, a selection of steel bars and cables, sunshades, sections of fibreglass boat hulls, all sorts of containers made out of metal, glass and plastic. The total amount of non-organic rubbish weighed 2 tonnes.
The underwater enthusiasts were assisted by five outboard motor rubber dinghies from the Arenal and Cap Roig sailing clubs, and by the Majorcan fishing vessel, Peda, belonging to the Environment ministry.
