Disused quarry to become leisure site

SON SERVERA
The Environment ministry of the Balearic government is to undertake a regeneration project of the Torremolinos quarry, located alongside Son Servera's football ground. Eventually, the site is to be converted into a leisure and recreation area.

Local mayor, Damia Ripoll confirmed that the quarry was closed in 1974, and after 30 years of abandonment, the surroundings have become completely run down. Lack of upkeep and accumulation of waste material now present a danger to the public as the site is 10 metres deep; at the time of the quarry's closure, there were no watertight security measures. “When the works on the football pitch began, we realised that earth was being thrown into the quarry. Technicians from the Environment ministry arrived on the scene and through Town Hall sources, we approached the government department about regenerating the site into a recreation area”, explained the mayor.

Educational zoo

MURO
Miquel Martorell, promotor of a zoological park project and company director for “Majorcan Contract Gardening Work” has been outlining the main features of a “nature park” in the country district of Sant Martí in Muro.

Martorell defends “the ecological interest of the project” and claims that “the animals which we will house here will only be small and won't pose any threat to the residents”.

According to Martorell, the zoo will include a tropical zone with waterfalls so that animals coming from other parts of the world will be able to adapt. There will be a separate section for creatures native to the Balearics, with a farm and school aiming to provide naturalist education for the very young.

In spite of recent criticism, Martorell retorts “The project is in the interests of ecology because it will enable animal life to flourish”. He therefore supported a decision by the Island's Planning Commission which authorised the project in the face of unfavourable technical reports. “We have permission from the ministries of Tourism, Environment and Agriculture to go ahead with the park which altogether will measure some 38'000 square metres”.

Cafeteria and bar plans

INCA
The old warehouse at Inca train station which underwent building reforms 4 years ago is to become a bar and cafeteria especially for train and bus users. It will form an integral part of the transport area in Inca which is to have a structural facelift, starting next month.

Local authorities have decided to put a contract for the management of the bar-cafeteria over a 10-year period, out to tender.
Tramuntana Fair

LLUC
This year's Fira de la Serra de Tramuntana, which took place last Sunday in an area surrounding the Monastery at Lluc, was a platform for exhibitions of local food and drink produce from around the Island, including honey, wine, jam and oil. Local mayor Antonio Gomez said that in other years, the fair had concentrated on different sectors such as footwear.
