TWELVE years ago, Nils Burwitz, as a gift to the people and village of Valldemossa, offered to create two stain glass windows to replace the crumbling, and eventually, bricked-up windows in la Cartuja. Tomorrow, they will finally be unveiled.
The two stain glass windows, based on two scetches of the little girl Santa Catalina, by Valldemossa resident Josep Coll Bardolet.
Originally from Cataluña, Bardolet has lived in Valldemossa for 60 years. Now aged 92 and an illustrious son of the village, he has helped Burwitz create the two masterpieces which have recently been installed.
The official blessing of the windows by the Bishop of Majorca, Jesus Murugio tomorrow evening, co-incides with Valldemoss's Canta Catalina Thomas fiestas which are currently being celebrated.
Burwitz explained yesterday that the two windows depict two scenes from the ancient legend of Santa Catalina and also feature the lover and the beloved, the faithful and God.
Both are nearly four metres high and 1.75 metres wide and Burwitz admits that he is extremely pleased with the result.
He said that the village's over 80*s have already seen the windows at a special mass on Sunday night they were dancing with joy.
Burwitz describes the windows as contemporary stain glass.
He has not used led this time, but blown glass. He explained that he has used enamel colours which he treated with acid.
They give a very light feeling to the church now, all the colours merge, they're very mysterious images and when the light falls on them, they're like an artist's water colours, he said yesterday.
It's been rather complex and the windows have come together like puzzles in the end, he added.
One of the windows is over the tourists entrance and the other just inside the Cartuja.
The two windows will be blessed during a special mass tomorrow morning at 11am.
