SINCE news of the possible closure of Palma's Centro Canino animal shelter really sorry about the centre being forced to close and have all signed a petition. It gives us all here more hope, she added. The appeal seems to be gathering broke in the Bulletin last week, interest in saving the centre has rocketed.
Over the past few days, the shelter has received a flood of calls from concerned local residents offering support. Staff at the dogs' sanctuary have been given new hope of surviving the demolition.
A committee member from the Centro Canino said yesterday: Since the Bulletin published the story we've been inundated with phone calls. Everyone who rings wants to help, by either giving money or work. They are speed with over 100 names on the petition to date. The shelter said often people are unsure how to help, but added that the best support would be a letter to the Centro Canino that they could add to the petition.
Bulldozers are in place at the current site, which houses over 300 dogs and cats, to make way for Palma's new Green Belt. With building work stopped on a new site following complaints from neighbours, the centre, founded 30 years ago by Briton Jane Reynolds, has hit crisis point. Staff launched an appeal last week and asked animal lovers to write letters of support. One committee member said: We need help and ask people to not let the last 30 years mean nothing.
