Tourist cycle routes to receive government funds

Staff Reporter
THE Institute for Tourism strategy in the Balearic Islands (Inestur) signed an agreement yesterday with Pollensa Town Council for the investment of 30'000 euros in setting up a series of routes in the district for cycling tours.

According to the regional ministry of Tourism, those who penned the document were the director general of Tourism administration and vice-president of Inestur, Josep Aloy; and the mayor of Pollensa, Joan Cerdá.

The Town Council is thereby committed to carrying out works to make by-ways suitable for cycling tourism and to expedite the necessary licenses for such works. The government, meanwhile, will make the 30'000 euros available as funding.

It has been a recent policy of the Islands' government under the leadership of the Popular Party, to develop and expand cycle routes in the Balearics. The move comes as part of a wider agenda to encourage forms of tourism which offer alternatives to traditional sun, sea and sand packages.

From a safety standpoint, the government suggests that using already-existing, and refurbished cross-country tracks, will be preferable to cyclists using major highways.
