THE official population of the Balearic islands has risen to 947'361 inhabitants.
The figure, confirmed yesterday by central government, has been taken from the total number of people registered with local town councils across the Islands as at 1 January, 2003. The total population of Spain rose to 42'717'064 inhabitants, equivalent to an increase of 879'170 people over and above figures taken from the previous year's census. Population statistics of Spanish regions are compiled in a report by a Registered Citizen Board which acts for central government administration at a district level. Official population figures for each Spanish municipality will be published by the National Institute of Statistics, once they have been officially declared.
