Police co-ordination set to improve under new Mayor

MIQUEL Angel Ramis, the government representative, said yesterday that he was confident that police co-ordination with the team of new Mayor Catalina Cirer would be even better that the cordial relations maintained with outgoing Mayor Joan Fageda and his team. Cirer was Ramis's predecessor in the post, an office which controls the National Police, while the city council has responsibility for the Local Police, although the two forces work closely together.
PROMISES
One of Cirer's election promises was to improve citizen security and she said earlier this week that this would be one of her priorities. Ramis also said that he was on excellent terms with Cirer, which will only serve to make relations between the two departments even more amenable than when Fageda was Mayor. The representative commented on the increase in delinquency recorded in the Balearics last year.
This was denounced earlier this week by the AUGC, the Guardia Civil Association who claimed it was a direct result of the lack of co-ordination between security forces. Ramis said: “I am very concerned about delinquency, and we are working to try and reduce figures.” He added that he thought the newly-introduced fast trials are a medium and long term solution, not a short-term on.
However, he went on to underline the statistics for the first four months of the year, which, he claimed, showed a drop in crime compared to the same period last year.
WELLBEING
Despite this, Ramis said that he was not satisfied and added it was necessary “to keep on working, as delinquency is one of the most important factors in evaluating the wellbeing of society.” The AUGC had complained of lack of co-ordination earlier this week, at its annual assembly, when it also criticised the conditions of safety members had to endure while on missions to Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He claimed that they had to use jeeps, not armoured vehicles when operating in mine-strewn areas and their weapons were also problematical.
The planes used for transport were also criticised, and the state of the plane has been blamed for the crash in which 62 Spanish soldiers died in Turkey.
