BRITISH HOLIDAYMAKERS EVACUATE THEIR HOTEL

QUICK THINKING HOTEL STAFF EXTINGUISH BOILER ROOM FIRE

QUICK thinking British holidaymakers yesterday evacuated a Magalluf hotel while staff rapidly extinguished a small fire in the basement of the Hotel Honolulu. No one was injured in the “spontaneous” evacuation operation although three people were treated for smoke inhalation, according to Calvia Council and 061 emergency service sources. The alarm was raised at 1pm when one of the hotel employees noticed smoke coming from one of the boiler rooms in the basement.
As the smoke quickly spread through the ground floor, the holidaymakers, mostly British, responded quickly by voluntarily evacuating the building and gathering round the pool and in the gardens under the guidance of Local Police and fire fighters. The fire was quickly put out by one of the hotel staff using a fire extinguisher.
Fire inspectors checked the scene of the minor blaze and the building before giving the all clear for the 100-plus guests to return inside at about 2pm, in time for lunch. Palma fire fighters tackled a blaze in Palma earlier yesterday morning when fire damaged a sixth-floor apartment, but the building was not evacuated.
