2.500 square metre sewage leak in the Bay of Palma

WATER BOARD SAYS LEAK WAS CAUSED BY SUDDEN DROP IN POWER

THE Bay of Palma was yesterday invaded by a 2.500 square metre sewage leak from a pumping station.
The sewage water spilled out of the pumping station in front of the Avenida exit off the sea front, just past the GESA building and just metres down from the city centre's only beach. Municipal water board EMAYA, in an official statement, said that the sewage water started leaking out of the pumping station at 10.47am.
According to the water board, the cause of the leak was a sudden drop in power along the high tension cable which powers the pump station.
The drop in power, could have caused the pump station to “over load,” leading to the leak.
However, EMAYA engineers and technicians, assisted by electrical engineers from the power company GESA-ENDESA, were at the scene quickly and the leak was repaired and shut off within a period of two hours. Water board bosses praised the engineers' quick response and ability to resolve the problem relatively swiftly. EMAYA also pointed out that the pumping station, on average, handles 70.000 cubic metres of sewage water per day and that leaks are extremely rare. The water board apologised to the public for any discomfort the sewage leak may have caused, adding that such unforeseen incidents are beyond the control of the water board and can only be dealt with when they occur.
