EXPERTS invited to Palma by the Spanish Association of Telecommunications Engineers called on people to have confidence in the regulations governing the installation of mobile telephone antenna and in the scientific controls to which they are subject. Juan Repesa, a member of the Scientific Research Council and a health ministry consultant, said that the task of scientists was not so much to answer the question on whether or not it (the use of mobile phones and other telecommunications technologies) is harmful, but what are the levels of safety. He went on to say that although unanimity does not exist in science, there is a majority consensus in the world scientific community, backed by institutions such as the World Health Organisation, on the levels of radiations which can affect health. He added that Spanish regulations on mobile phones set a limit 50 times lower than the level at which effects are noted in persons.
