BALEARIC leader Francesc Antich yesterday
opened the first stretch of the new road which links Palma with the University.
He was accompanied by Francesc Quetglas, Balearic the minister of public works, housing and transport, and Llorenç Huguet, the Rector of the University. Quetglas explained that the stretch of road, part of the PM-111, which links Palma and Valldemosa, has been improved between the ring road and the Cami dels Reis roundabout. He added it had been respectful with the environment and corresponds to the concept of road network promoted by the government, which combines improvements in safety with preserving the environment.
He went on to say that this was just the first stage in the improvements of the road, which is used by an average of 30'000 vehicles a day.
Antich spoke in similar terms, and expressed his satisfaction at the results of this stage of the improvements.
He announced that the second stage, which will end at the University, will start in a few days time.
Antich also said that great efforts were being made on the project which will link the city and the university by train.
He pointed out that since responsibility for the roads has been handed over to the island councils more money than ever has been spent in the Balearics.
The road has been widened, two new roundabouts have been built and a bike only lane and path for pedestrians have been built.
Work has cost 6.2 million euros.
Some 400 trees of different species have been planted and there are also 4'000 square metres of shrubs.
Work started in February last year, and has been carried out by Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas.
