Pollensa

THE owner of the illegal golf course at Can Guilló in Pollensa is in the process of applying to the regional Environment ministry for permission to use purified water for irrigation purposes.

Last week, ministry sources confirmed that the paperwork is being dealt with and that the owner has been asked to provide adequate evidence that the use of the water will be solely for land use.

It was only a few months ago when the same owner approached the regional ministry of Agriculture and Pollensa Town Council to ask permission to convert a property on the land into a rural tourism establishment comprising seven bedrooms.

Muro

A Horse-riding Association in Muro has asked the local mayor, Miquel Ramis, if a local hippodrome could be built for breaking horses in, and training them in the art of trotting and galloping. Apart from its primary functional use in the art of equestrianism, the hippodrome could also be used for exhibitions and competitions during local festivals.

Leading figures in the association are drawing up a letter to hand to the Balearic government and Council of Majorca, from whom they will ask financial assistance for the project.

Felanitx

FELANITX Town Council is opening enquiries into two roadways that have been forged through forested mountain areas in the district, and which have been condemned by the Balearic ecological watchdog, GOB and the United Left/Green Party coalition (EU-EV). Both organisations have alerted the Council to the fact that the building of the mountain roads have meant the felling of pine trees by two individuals.

Last week, the conservationists took their case to Felanitx Town Hall to condemn what they saw, as an environmentally destructive action in Serra Llonga. The land owners in question, who live in the forested area, justified their action by saying that the roadways had been forged for safety reasons to create clearings between one area of forest and another, to form a fire barrier.

Calvia

CALVIA Town Council signed an agreement yesterday with a regional government Youth Tourism group for the reform of an old 18th-century Majorcan property, Casal Can Verger. It is hoped that once refurbished, the house be used for Youth group activities.

Carlos Delgado, Calvia's mayor, presided over the occasion which was also attended by Juan Francisco, director of the Youth group.
The Balearic government is to finance the project to the tune of 230'000 euros. The money will be used not only for works on the dwelling but also to landscape the surrounding grounds.

Santa Margalida

INSPECTORS were making investigations yesterday on the land that is proposed as the site for the new Can Picafort Church. The visit followed legal condemnation made by a Santa Margalida councillor in offices of the Guardia Civil, saying that works for the building had begun without appropriate licenses.

Santa Margalida's mayor, Antoni del Olmo, confirmed that inspectors had been looking at the paperwork associated with the building project and were able to report that a license had been officially requested and that deficiencies found in the way the project had administratively been conducted to date were easily rectifiable. They have nevertheless confirmed that it is within the power of local authorities to close the works.

Alaro
THE Majorcan Socialist party (PSM) in Alaro is keen to make it clear that a private parking project that the mayor's deputy, Antoni Rebassa, wants to carry forward, is “unwarranted” and “unnecessary”. The Socialists said the previous government had built a public carpark at son Turgores to help alleviate parking difficulties in the area.
