The Balearics is getting ready for FITUR, Spain's main annual international travel trade fair which opens its doors in Madrid next week. This year's five-day event will provide Spain's tourism industry with an important chance to discuss the sector's performance last year and the expectations for this year while also checking out competing destinations. Holidays sales in the United Kingdom are still around ten per cent down on last year, but Majorca and Spain are selling well and apparently attracting more interest than Greece and Turkey which at the moment are not selling as well as last year. One of the main reasons for slow holiday sales is that the family market has been very sluggish over the past few weeks and tour operators are expected to continue offering large discounts on summer package holidays well into next month.
