In the early hours of yesterday morning, the temperature at Palma's Son Sant Joan airport was -1.6ºC, the lowest in Majorca as overnight freezing and black ice caused problems in some parts of the island, especially inland. The temperature at Palma airport has not fallen so low since 1985, when the temperatures plummeted to -6ºC. However, -6ºC was nothing compared to lowest recorded temperature of the past century which was -15.5ºC in Lluc in February 1956. Director of the Balearic Meteorological Office, Agusti Jansa, said yesterday that the lowest temperatures are often registered at Palma airport because it lies in the Sant Jordi plain at sea level. Any further snow is highly unlikely as no rain is forecast for the next few days which will see temperatures start to gradually rise, so it will continue to feel cold until temperatures have returned to normal for this time of year, some seven degrees higher during the day. The strong winds of the past few days are also expected to die away today and change direction, easing the wind chill factor as the polar front moves away from the Balearics and to the south.
