More snow expected today and tomorrow

The Civil Defence department is maintaining its storm warnings for Majorca as well as Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Castile and Leon and Catalonia (provinces of Barcelona, Lerida and Gerona). The weatherman predicts that Majorca can expect snow at 500 metres and winds of between 80 and 90 kilometres per hour. There will be cloudy intervals and scattered downpours but no changes in temperature are expected. There is a danger of frost in the centre of the island. Minorca will also be hit by strong winds. More snow can be expected on Monday, once again at 500 metres and there will be no change in temperatures. But despite the low temperatures, the Balearics have still fared better than many parts of the Peninsula, where up to 176 villages in Asturias were cut off by snow and more than 60'000 children in Galicia and Castile and Leon were unable to get to school. Twenty mountain passes were closed and drivers had to use chains in another 50, most of them in the north of the Peninsula.
