Civil Defence maintained its weather alert in the Balearics, as once again the islands were lashed by heavy winds which reached 80 to 100 kph in Minorca and Majorca, and snow fell above 1'000 metres in Majorca. Manacor was one of the worst hit parts of the island yesterday, with considerable rainfall in the morning, which played havoc with the traffic. Householders are advised to make sure that doors and windows are properly closed as a precaution against the winds. But it is not just the Balearics which are suffering from the cold spell. The weather alert is also operational in Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Castile-Leon, Navarre, Catalonia, Aragon and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. No further drop in the temperature is expected today, but the risk of snow continues, and the winds will continue to be strong, particularly in the north west of the Balearics.
