The Deixalles Foundation yesterday presented its annual report for 2001. The presentation was attended by Josep Noguera, representing Diocesan Action; Jaume Xavier Roselló, president of PIMEM, the small and medium sized enterprises' association; Josep Capó, also of PIMEM; Antoni Pons, manager of Deixalles, and Xesca Martí, head of the Foundation's environmental department. The Foundation's board is formed by PIMEM and Diocesan Action, and it specialises in fighting poverty and social problems through recycling and preserving the environment. Its recycling plants offer work opportunities to the disadvantaged. Last year it provided work for 214 persons, including immigrants, people with mental problems, drug addicts, alcoholics, long-term unemployed, ex-prisoners, tramps and women with family burdens. Deixelles' factories specialise in carpentry, classifying used clothing and repairing domestic appliances and toys. It also runs a recyling programme in which 11 hotel chains (113 hotels with 63'411 beds) are involved and runs awareness campaigns in schools. It is also working on programmes of cooperation with El Salvador and Venezuela. This year it has opened new premises in Calvia and Soller.
