The Sant Joan de Deu power station Coll den Rebassa, which has been under attack from residents for years, was yesterday finally taken out of action, much to the local community's joy. The power station is the first of two which are being decommissioned. After 12 years of supplying Majorca and Minorca with power, the power station yesterday ceased to belch smoke out from its chimneys - the main cause of thousands of complaints from the local community. However, the power station will not be dismantled as it could be reconditioned to operate on natural gas, which is what the Balearic government is hoping will become the future of power in the Balearics. The proposed gas supply link from the mainland, via Ibiza, will enter Majorca at Sant Joan de Deu - however, the public have further reservations about the health and safety risk.
