Workers in the handling department at the new terminal at Palma's Son Sant Joan airport complain about plagues of cockroaches, mosquitoes and other parasites, which are forcing the fumigation service to go into action every day. The plagues are said to be caused by the recent rains and high temperatures. However, the airport's medical staff say that there has been no increase in the number of people being treated for insect bites. An airport spokesman confirmed that the fumigation workers were spraying every day, but said that this was normal in an airport with outdoor installations. He said that the plagues did not affect passenger areas which are indoors.
