The Balearic population has experienced the biggest increase in Spain over the past ten years. According to the results of last year's census, over the past decade, the Balearic population grew in size by 19 per cent, while the Spanish population in general, increased by five per cent, nearly two million people and slightly above the forecast figures. The biggest reason for the regional population booms, such as the Balearics, is the influx of foreign residents. In 1991, there were 353.267 registered foreigners living in Spain, but during the 90*s that figure nearly quadrupled to 1.5 million. The sharpest rises in population have been along the Mediterranean coast and the islands, Balearics and the Canaries, as opposed to the large cities. In the short term, Spain will also have an immigrant population similar in size to Belgium and Germany, accounting for between 8 and 9 per cent.
