New Palma police officers are sworn in at City Hall

Fourteen new Local Police officers were sworn in at the Palma city hall yesterday morning. They had all had to sit a competitive exam to obtain their post. The swearing-in ceremony was presided by Mayor Joan Fageda, accompanied by deputy Mayor José Manuel Sierra, and Local Police chief Joan Mut. There were no women among the new officers, who included two sergeants. Mayor Fageda spoke of the importance which the Local Police force in Palma is acquiring day by day. “The man in the street likes to be closer to the police,” he said. Addressing the new officers, he say “People appreciate you, although they also criticise you and often it is not your fault.” He called on them to act with common sense and said it is always easier to receive orders than to give orders so that the police can help people even more. The Mayor pointed out that at the moment the Local Police force has 800 members and “it is not always easy to find an atmosphere which pleases everyone.” He described the Local Police as “a large family which receives the first impressions of the man in the street.”
