The Balearic government will spend 162'273 euros in an effort to save up to 20 per cent of energy in street lighting in Majorca, under an agreement signed between the government and the Council of Majorca. The money will also be used to make the lighting more efficient and reduce pollution. It will be matched by a similar amount by the Council of Majorca, government spokesman Antoni Garcias said yesterday. The balance of the money needed will be put up by the 27 municipalities which have shown interest in the energy saving project. Savings will be in the region of six million kilowatt hours a year, a saving of 541'000 euros. More than 10'000 street lights in Majorca will be affected, Garcias said. Light bulbs will be changed and the timing devices made more efficient.
