The soaring Balearic temperatures have meant that demand for power has reached an all time record as people rush to turn on their air conditioning systems to keep cool. Data from the Palma Met office yesterday said that over the last 15 days temperatures have risen by at least 10 degrees reaching a record of 37.7 degrees Centigrade in Palma this week. Meanwhile the Gas and Electricity Board (GESA) reports that demand for electricity this month has risen by 14 per cent. A spokesperson said it's the heat and probably the World Cup, with thousands of people tuning in to watch, especially when Spain was playing. Plans to build a new power station in the Balearics are still on hold despite the fact that demand for electricity grows every year. The spokesperson went on to say that at present they were keeping up with demand. The local government has consistently launched power saving campaigns but on the whole they have not proved too successful.
