The cost of airline tickets in Spain is to go up this summer. Spanish airlines have been unable to meet the rising costs of fuel, airport taxes which central government increased on January 1 and the added costs of tightening security in the wake of September 11 and are going to pass the extra costs on to the consumer. Low passenger levels over the winter have not helped either with airlines not as financially sound as they were this time last year, for example, and can not afford to meet all the costs on their own. The first signs of increased ticket prices will be witnessed towards the end of the summer. The news will anger the Balearic government which is pushing for greater discounts for residents as flight prices have already risen.
