The Balearic government intends to introduce a system of housing quotas based on the model being adopted by the Insular Council of Majorca. In a bid to try and slow down the rapid rate of urban development in the Balearics, the government wants to introduce quotas which will apply to coastal and rural areas, as well as Palma. Balearic President Francesc Antich and the leader of the Insular Council Maria Antonia Munar discussed the plan over dinner during the week, during which Munar explained her idea for housing quotas in rural areas. The local authorities' attempt to try and put the brakes on the construction industry has angered the development sector. Leading constructors and the confederation of Balearic business associations has warned that clipping the industry's wings, during a period of economic uncertainty will lead to job losses.
