Red Cross Flag Day

The Balearic chapter of the Red Cross held its first Flag Day in Palma in 15 years, but it did so without prior announcements - volunteers just put out tables in the streets and waved collection boxes at anyone who happened to pass by. There were 19 tables in all, in strategic places such as Jaime III, Plaza Mayor, Plaza Cort, Plaza Olivar, Parc de la Mar and the Rambla, between 9.30am and 2.30pm. The Red Cross does receive subsidies, but chairman Gerard Bonet explained that the funds collected on Flag Days goes towards covering running costs and helping in projects. The Red Cross works with drug addicts, the elderly, prisoners and immigrants and also collaborates in international projects. Yesterday the volunteers were helped by other local associations such as Club Elsa, the housewives association and the Santa Catalina neighbourood association.
