The National Police riot squad armed with rubber bullets yesterday evicted a group of squatters from an old, historic palace belonging to Majorca aristocracy in Palma. The squatters moved in to the building last November and early yesterday morning a group of 20 police wearing protective clothing and carrying riot shields slipped in to the building in Can Oliver and caught the squatters by surprise. Once in position, police informed the squatters of the situation and asked them to leave, but on receiving no reply, enforced a Palma court's eviction order. Police evicted eight adults including the group's Italian spokesperson, a child and a large number of pets. Once the building was clear a team of builders moved in to block up the old palace to prevent the squatters from moving back in to the premises. The squatters complained of being illegally evicted, but there was no violence.
