Cabbies angry over proposal

Taxi drivers from all over Majorca, with the exception of Palma, attended a meeting in Calvia yesterday and resolved to seek an urgent interview with public works minister Francesc Quetglas, to question him about a rumoured 50 per cent increase in the number of licences granted. The drivers say that they will wait until Wednesday but if they have not been received by then, they will disconnect their radio transmitters from Maundy Thursday, the 28th. Most of the drivers agreed that no more licences were needed as there has been a drop in tourism and there is not enough work to go around, particularly in winter. The cabbies also voted in favour of asking those who are members of Pimem, the small and medium-sized business association, to resign because it did not inform its members of the government's plans to increase the number of licences. The meeting was attended by cabbies from Calvia Andraitx, Porreres, Alcudia, Santanyi, Son Servera, Sant Llorenç, Soller, Pollensa, Llucmajor, Felanitx and Inca.
