A British cyclist was run over and killed by a bus in a most unfortunate accident while cycling along the Porreres to Felanitx road yesterday. The 30-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released by the police, was riding with a group of cyclists along the road early yesterday afternoon when the tragic accident happened just before 3pm. According to police sources, for reasons as yet to be confirmed, the woman lost her balance and toppled over on to the tarmac, straight in to the path of the bus which was in the process of overtaking the group of cyclists. The driver of the bus tried to avoid the woman, but there was nothing he could do on the thin stretch of road with more cyclists on the inside. Police sources said that the victim died at the scene. Earlier in the day a 65-year-old woman was knocked down and killed as she tried to cross the Manacor road in Palma. The accident happened at 10am, when she stepped out in to the road just as a EMT public bus was passing. The driver had no time to react and the elderly woman was hit head on by the bus covering the Son Ferriol service. The victim, identified as Juana Calego Carrio, collapsed just yards from the pavement and passed out. She had suffered a severe blow to the head. A Local Police unit and an ambulance were at the scene within minutes and paramedics attended the victim at the scene of the accident before rushing her to the capital's Son Dureta hospital suffering from serious brain damage. None of the passengers on the bus were injured, but the driver suffered severe shock and needed medical assistance. Last night he was being looked after by family and friends. According to eye witnesses, the elderly woman was not using a zebra crossing to cross the busy road when she was hit, but the police have launched an investigation.
