Palma hospitals were put on full emergency alert earlier yesterday morning after a serious accident along the Palma to Andratx motorway. The accident occurred at 6.40am near Genova. Six vehicles were involved and there were a total of six victims, all of whom were rushed to hospitals in Palma. Emergency teams were confronted with over-turned cars and victims trapped in their mangled vehicles. The exact cause of the accident remains to be confirmed, but the Guardia Civil suspect that there had been some kind of liquid on the road. Part of the motorway remained closed until 8am as police, fire fighters and ambulance crews removed the victims and cleared the area. Long traffic jams built up while cranes were brought in to upright and tow away the damaged vehicles and the traffic problems were only added to by drivers slowing down to have a look at the scene. Traffic police sources said last night that drivers are regularly caught for speeding along the particular stretch of road where the accident happened and that once the first car had lost control, it would have been hard for the drivers behind to avoid a collision. Fire fighters used tons of sand to cover the road where the accident happened, not only to cover up the suspect liquid which may have caused the accident, but to also soak up fuel and lubricants which spilled on to the road in the accident.
