The Euroteléfono (900 166 000) set up by the Centro Baleares Europa and the Consumer department has handled 700 telephone calls since the hot line was set up on December 15 and over the past two weeks, the numbers of calls has fallen dramatically. Balearic government sources said yesterday that the decrease in callers shows that most of the problems with the single currency have been over come. The Centro Baleares Europa said yesterday that this week it handled just 59 calls while during the first few weeks of the euro's introduction they were dealing with 80 callers per day. However, the majority of callers are contacting the centre to complain about the high increase in prices. On average, since the euro was born prices in the euro zone have risen by 2.5 per cent.
