There are no plans to extend the land currently occupied by Son Sant Joan airport, according to Carlos Medrano, the director general of airports. He was speaking at the unveiling of the gold plaque of the Majorcan Tourism Board (Fomento del Turismo) at the airport. However Medrano did say that AENA, the airport authority, wanted to improve the efficiency and services of the airport by carrying out the master plan. But, he stressed, there will be no invasion of more land nor environmental impact. In answer to questions from journalists, he admitted that an increase in airport charges was a complicated matter, but Spanish charges are lower than those in the European Union and all we are trying to do is improve services to all suppliers. He went on to say that AENA will be investing considerable sums in infrastructures over the period 2000-2007. He confirmed that no bids had been received for the construction of a maintenance hangar, even though conditions had been reduced to a minimum. We'll have to see what happens next, he said.
