The local Farmers' Union has presented its annual Christmas campaign to promote local products, which for the first time is being carried out in municipal markets all over the island, including Palma. The message is consuming locally produced food is the best subvention Majorcan farmers could receive, said Jaume Pocoví, secretary general of the union, at the presentation which took place in Palma's Plaza Olivar. This year, the Council of Majorca has subsidised the full cost of the campaign, five million pesetas. Pocoví was accompanied by Maria Antonia Munar, the president of the Council of Majorca, and the head of its promotions department, Bernat Aguiló. He said holding the campaign in the markets was justified because it was necessary for the producing and marketing sectors to go hand in hand in order to succeed. Unlike other years the promotional campaign will not consist of an itinerant stand which will visit all the markets on the island, but posters will be hung in the markets and the stalls will hand out leaflets with the slogan It's from Majorca, it's good. Another new aspect this year is that the campaign will also be held in the Palma markets, unlike previous years when it was held mostly in the outlying towns and villages. Pocoví said that the leaflets will give a list of Majorcan products which are marketed, the firms which make them and contact telephone numbers for the producers as we are often asked where these food products can be purchased. Local food products are generally more expensive than others and Maria Antonia Munar justified this, saying that you cannot make quality articles at a low price. She also pointed out that up to now, Majorcan food products had not had any health problems.
