The Balearics is one of six Spanish regions which have been called to top level tourism talks in Madrid at the start of next month. The Secretary of State for Tourism, Juan José Güemes, wants the country's main tourist destinations to combine forces in creating a system which will ensure that the bulk of holiday bookings are confirmed six months in advance. Güemes wants the Spanish tourist industry to get a six-month head start on the rest of the international market, some sectors of which have been badly hit by September 11. Güemes wants to hear from each of the six regions, what steps have been taken to adapt to the new market and ensure that next summer proves as equally successful as this year. A third of all tourists who come to Spain, come for the sun and the sea and the Secretary of State will be stressing the need for the so-called bucket and spade market to be given the maximum level of care and attention as it is the foundation of the tourist industry.
