Over the past ten years, demand for electricity has risen by 75 per cent in the Balearics, hence a new energy saving campaign is to be launched. A long term energy savings plan was unveiled by the Balearic Minister for Energy and Innovation, Príam Villalonga, who said that over the next 15 years, the aim is to reduce the demand for power by 22 per cent while simultaneously introducing new renewable energy schemes. The message yesterday was quite simply that the Balearics can no longer continue using as much electricity, with an annual increase in demand of 7.5 per cent. By the end of this year, consumption will have risen by 7.3 per cent, the equivalent of 5'000 million kilowatts per hour this can not continue, the Minister said.
