Balearics to help Spain on-line with e-commerce

A total of 18 countries across Europe are to take part in a European Commission electronic commerce initiative “Go Digital” and the Spanish programme is to be co-ordinated by the Balearics. The Balearic government's European Centre has been put in charge of launching the initiative to get more small to medium sized businesses regularly using electronic commerce systems in Spain. Representatives from 16 organisations from across Spain are currently meeting in Palma to discuss the new programme which runs until September next year. Apart from the 14 European Union member states, Poland, Slovenia, Iceland and Norway have also signed up to take part in the initiative. Currently in Spain, 44 per cent of the small business sector are on-line and connected to the internet, but the vast majority only use the net to access information, either unaware of all the other services the net provides and what e-commerce involves.
