New association will fight for the legalisation of pot

A new association, Canem Llevant, has been set up to fight for the legalisation of marihuana. They used a congress on drugs organised by the Balearic government and the Artà and Capdepera councils as a launching pad to make their aims known. A spokesman said that one of their aims was to promote growing cannabis at home, so it will not be necessary “to enter an illegal market, full of adulterations and risks.” They also plan to inform people of the medical uses of cannabis, different ways of using it and how to prevent risks. But their chief aim, the spokesman said, was to “fight against the unjust and biased ban on the consumption and cultivation of cannabis. In our view, repressive policies against illicit drugs have proved to be a failure. Not only has production and consumption increased, but this policy also implicitly reduces individual rights, leads to social alarm, because of lack of information, and forces consumers to anti-social behaviour and to enter the illegal drugs market, leading to the creation of mafias derived from the ban.”
