The Balearics submitted an official request to central government yesterday for the local administration to be given the right to manage the region's airports and inter-island flights and increase resident flight discounts to 50 per cent. The Balearic cabinet, which met yesterday morning to discuss the current aviation crisis which has already seen drastic reductions in the number of Balearic flights and job losses, has demanded that central government take immediate steps to improve the domestic flight situation for the Balearics and adopt new measures to help Spanish airlines through the crisis. Government spokesperson Antoni Garcias said that the official request has been handed over to Madrid and the Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, currently in Majorca and the European Union Minister for Transport, Spaniard Loyola de Palacio.
