£35 return flights from UK to Majorca as crisis grips

Spanish airlines took their plea for government aid to Madrid yesterday pointing out to the Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar, that the United States, British, French and German governments are all prepared to help prop up their airline industries and that Aznar should do the same. The association, which met for urgent talks in Palma this week to discuss the current crisis gripping the airline industry fears that the situation for Spanish airlines, unless there is immediate help, is in danger of spiralling out of control causing massive operational cut backs and job losses on a scale with those already witnessed across Europe and the United States. The airline association's chairman, Felipe Navio, said in Madrid yesterday “the crisis is gathering pace very quickly and we need the government to provide an aid plan.”
