A drawing competition for children, more than 20 musical events, a tribute to the 13th century King Jaime II and his wife Esclaramunda, a regatta and a walk to Lluc monastery are the chief events planned for the Fifth Day of Majorca. The events will be held from today until September 29, although the most important day will be September 12. Details of the programme were announced yesterday by Maria Antonia Munar, the Council president, who said that more people and towns were involved in the celebrations each year. She added that it was important for Majorca to preserve its cultural identity and its traditions. The programme was described as ambitious by Guillem Ginard, head of the Council's inter-departmental relations department. He said it tried to promote the local groups of dancers and musicians. Celebrations start today with the presentation of a regatta at the Cala Gamba yacht club, in which 42 boats will be taking part this weekend. Events will be held in 21 towns and villages, six more than the previous year, and the budget is 35.8 million pesetas, 13.8 million pesetas more than 2000. The walk to Lluc will take place on the night of September 8.
