Iberia under fire over move to scrap large family discounts

Spanish airline Iberia sparked outrage yesterday by announcing that it is to scrap its special discounts for large families. The airline came under fire from the Balearic Association of Large Families and called on the government to step in and either force Iberia to reinstate the discounts or cover the costs itself using public funding. There are 1.500.000 large families in Spain and in the Balearics, Iberia's decision hit 250.000 people who have no other means of getting to the mainland than by air. The discounts, in accordance with the family protection act, entitled families of between 3 and 6 children to savings of up to 20 per cent. Parents with seven to nine kids were entitled to discounts of 40 per cent and families of ten children or more, would save 50 per cent.
