The new municipal traffic plan for Palma comes in to effect today, replacing the dated current plan which has not been updated or modified since 1975. The new plan will include new parking allocations for residents, regular users and citizen card holders, new traffic laws aimed at easing the flow of traffic through and around the city, an increase in the number of pedestrianised zones and a plan to improve the city's environment, making the capital more user-friendly and comfortable for city residents. The new law prohibiting the parking of un-contracted hire cars in the city will come in to full effect and the city council is to clamp down hard on drivers who park on the pavements. As from today, any vehicle not registered in Palma and badly parked or blocking an access will be immediately towed away. Council spokesperson Jose Manuel Sierra said that over the next two weeks a massive information campaign is to be launched to make sure that everybody is aware of the new traffic laws and the penalties. For the next 15 days, the penalties will be flexible allowing for those people unaware of the changes - but come the middle of August there will be no excuses for those breaking the new traffic regulations in Palma which is on the verge of traffic and parking chaos.
