Breitling regatta sets sail in Portals

Yesterday was the first day of racing in the Breitling Regatta, seeing King Juan Carlos of Spain and his son and heir Prince Felipe racing against each other at the beginning of Majorca's prestigious yachting season. The hustle and bustle of security was apparent as competitors sped up and down the quay, making last minute preparations and alterations to the IMS class yachts. Sailors were winched up masts in the breeze to polish and tweak, making sure every last detail was primed for the start. The public were out in force to glimpse the Spanish royalty and the prince responded with a friendly smile and wave as he boarded CAM, where his crew waited expectantly for his arrival. The regatta will span three days and serves as a prelude to the Copa del Rey, the main yachting championship of the season starting next week. The royal family have long been keen and competitive sailors and are this year making no exception. The king will be competing against his son on the yacht Bribon 12, which won the regatta last year. The rest of the royal family, currently overseas on an official visit, are expected to join the Majorca party tomorrow.
