Palma's prostitution problem is becoming increasingly tense and yesterday residents in the neighbourhoods around the Son Pardo race track on the outskirts of Palma demanded that the city council take immediate action. Palma council's attempt to move prostitutes out of the city centre has merely forced the 1'000 plus prostitutes to set up business around the race track and residents, who have been campaigning since the start of the year have had enough. The populations of Cas Capiscol, Amanecer and Son Busquets yesterday rallied behind the call for a return to peace and tranquility and restoration of law, order and safety on the streets. We want to be able to go out for a stroll with our children after 10pm, a spokesperson for the residents' associations said. José Rodríguez, president of the Son Busquets residents' association, yesterday highlighted the plight of one of the neighbours who is literally surrounded by hundreds of prostitutes, many of African origin, every night. What sort of image is this projecting for our children? Rodriguez asked. We're worried that prostitution is related to the drugs' trade, which is why we are demanding that the local authorities take immediate and effective action to resolve the crisis, Rodriguez said.
