Things do not seem to be getting any better for the Balearics with the region facing yet another water problem this summer. According to the Balearic government's director general for water resources, Antoni Rodríguez, water levels in the island's wells and the water table are dangerously low. Antoni Rodríguez explained that, while the water levels are slightly higher than this time last year, the Autumn and Winter rains have failed to replenish the wells sufficiently. The situation is better than last year, but not as good as we thought, he said. Antoni Rodríguez added that years of over exploitation of water from the island's wells is still hampering the situation. But we're working on it and doing our best to make sure that water generated by the desalination plants proves to be enough to ease the strain on the wells and allow them to recover. A fresh water saving drive was launched yesterday with the Balearic government and all the regional Insular Councils co-operating in a water consumption management programme. Balearic Environment Minister, Margalida Rossello, announced the GDA scheme saying it will be the key to a new water culture.
