The Palma city council has launched its Nits a la Fresca (In the Cool of the Evening) programme for July and August. It is a wide-ranging programme of events, most of them taking place in the Parc de la Mar, a very pleasant spot on a summer evening. There are 32 films, nine plays, four dance performances and more than 20 concerts. It certainly offers variety, and all the events are free, but British residents will be disappointed over the films. For only two of them will be shown in English and one was made in 1948, the other in 1967. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre won Oscars for director John Huston and actor Walter Huston and it will be shown at 10pm on July 17. Point Blank, directed by John Boorman and starring Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson, will be shown on July 31. Hands up all those who haven't seen them umpteen times on television. But, if you can speak Spanish, you can enjoy some of the box office hits of this season: Traffic with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones on September 1; Men of Honour with Robert de Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr on August 29; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which has only been shown in the dubbed version in Spain) on August 19 and Space Cowboys with Clint Eastwood on July 8. Most of the other films have been dubbed into Catalan, including those for children.
