Last year was a busy one for the Red Cross in Minorca. The island team of 77 volunteers, eight conscientious objectors and two professionals, helped 1'631 people and carried out 15.557 operations. From helping transport the disabled, distribute food and other social works, the Red Cross also mounted its own land and sea rescue service and assisted scores of immigrants who needed hospital treatment. Of last year's 15 million peseta budget, the Red Cross finished the year with one million in the black, which this year is going to be used to help fund the purchase of a new vehicle for the disabled. At the moment the Red Cross only has the one specially adapted vehicle, which last year made 6.438 journeys and helped over 70 people in Mahon and Es Castell.
